All Music Guide
David and Steve Gordon, the go-to compilers and DJs for the Sequoia Groove label, are back with another thoroughly enjoyable compilation of chill-out groove music. Call it "mystical world groove" or "sensuous nu-global" music, but really, its is a three-way cross between worldbeat, ambient, and New Age musicthose who appreciate these genres will find plenty to love in these Sequoia Groove collections. Funky as they can get - and they do get pretty funky at times - they're never anything less than pleasant and gentle. Hotel Tara features a very cool surf-derived bassline on Ginkgo Garden's "Woodland Ride", a fun mix of faux-Gregorian chant and found-sound space-mission dialogue on Joe Weinick's "Apollo13", the unimpeachably funky "Radio Shamanistan by Opera to Relax and linger a little over Jaya Lakshmi's gorgeous "Govinda Hari". Very nice overall.

Music Design In Review
If you need a compilation to hold you over until the next installment in Sequoia's "Buddha-Lounge" series gets released, HOTEL TARA is the perfect place to take up residence. Like that series, the album features a luscious non-stop mix of ethnic-flavored grooves, spiritual essence and intoxicating beats compiled and mixed by the Gordon brothers. HOTEL TARA ups the "dreamy" quotient, creating an atmosphere that is at once peaceful and soulful. The beats are low-tempo and many of the songs have a touch of Indian instrumentation as well as a subtle retro-lounge flair. Artists include David and Steve Gordon, Gingko Garden, Althea W., Jaya Lakshmi, Artemisia and others. This is a great album for anyone looking for music that is mellow and cerebral - it is perfect for chilling out to.

HOTEL TARA, The Intimate Side of Buddha Lounge, is a collection of some of Sequoia Groove artists top shelf tracks. Intended for a relaxing evening at home the fourteen songs are a cool blend of spacey New Age, tribal, dance and a healthy dose of East meets West - a laid-back stream of consciousness laced with tribal drums, Eastern inspired instrumentations and dream-like croons.an excellent trip hop groove fest, making full use of samples and mellow keyboards to create an otherworldly vibe full of very jazzy lounge tunes. Sequoia Groove compilations such as HOTEL TARA serve as a good way to introduce new listeners to some pretty cool, chilled out artists.

In massage therapy, music is a (welcome) feature of the work. In fact, it is a vital component, no matter the treatment being performed. My wife and I own a small practice with two studios in town; Hotel Tara is in heavy rotation. At first, I thought the material might come off as a bit suggestive; after all, it would be easy to pigeonhole this in the sexy lounge file. But, Hotel Tara is too sophisticated for that. The groove is infectious, and the arrangements paced just right. With such a chill mood in a massage room, relaxation is effortless.

Daily OM
World music producers David and Steve Gordon's seamless incorporation of spatial mood and organic flow into their world/lounge music mixes sets them above the fray. With their support, walking across the restaurant main floor to your table, chilling to candlelight at home, or running along the beach at dawn with headphones becomes a magic, spiritual experience. Hotel Tara takes things down a notch from their usual yoga movement-oriented beats (from their acclaimed and bestselling Buddha Lounge series), bringing relaxing beds of gushing synthesizer, feminine whispers, and pianos tinkling. Masters of mellow world music, the Gordons are like Swiss mechanics setting the clockwork blossoming of maroon and pink mandalas behind one's eyelids and facilitating reverent, joyous, tantric relaxation.

With a roster of artists including Zingaia, Ginkgo Garden, Althea W., Karmacosmic, Opera to Relax, Hands Upon Black Earth, and, of course, Steve and David Gordon themselves, there's no shortage of great material. Artemisia's "The Green Hour" opens with heart-soothing tablas, feminine whispers, tamboura, rumbling bass, and steam-valve synths. Jaya Lakshmi delivers a joyous, heavenly version of "Govinda," her clear-as-a-bell voice slowly brightening a landscape of percussion, tangy berimbau, and buzzing drones. Opera to Relax sends things out on a slightly abstract New Wave note, with "Radio Shamanistan" featuring a jazzy electric fretless bass and high vocals soaring in and around space-age chimes.

The Gordon brothers also contribute music to the affair: David's "Floating" mixes skittering drum programs, clattering tablas, and romantic mood piano. Steve's "Season of Renewal" makes excellent use of romantic classical guitar, and together they instill "Enter the Sacred" with great peace and gentle beauty as sounds of nature and a shamanic drumbeat cohere and dissolve. Perfect to hear in its entirety over a long massage or deep headphone meditation with the sun against your eyelids, Hotel Tara shows once again that Sequoia Records has a superb roster of artists to pick from. It also has two brothers at the helm who know just how to structure an hour of listening for maximum depth, creating ebbs, eddies, rises, and falls in the energy levels until at last you're as refreshed and serene as if you just spent a month on a retreat at Hotel Tara. So unpack your duffel, turn on the hotel radio, and let the Gordon brothers make your stay cosmically pleasant.
