London-born Reiki master Shajan has created a wealth of melodic tones, spine-tingling drones, and nature sounds with his second volume of Music for Reiki and Meditation. What immediately stands out is the bold sharpness of many of the notes and tones here. Shajan knows his business and is not afraid to go out on a limb with music that aims straight for pressure areas of the body via the ears. Just as reflexology uses points in the foot to access the rest of the body, Shajan uses the ear, giving us his masterful use of electronic musical tonalities to awaken the spine and nervous system with shivering delight. Thus while the mind reposes into a gentle state of meditation via birdsong, trickling water, soft wood-flute pizzicato, and unobtrusive drones, the body is played like an electric xylophone via Shajan's goose-pimple-inducing electricity. "Light Touch" begins by layering ascending glissando synths to create a hovering sense of presence.

One can feel the tonalities lighting up the spine with the tactile vibrations of a barber's electric razor on the back of the neckand especially when a backsliding tone appears that sounds like a crying baby mixed with a Weed Whacker. Shajan is not wasting time here; the music hones in on its target like a healing missile before dissolving near the end into a dreamy vocal chorale. The following track, "Hands of Light," opens with the sound of peacefully chirping birds. These are gradually met by echoing plucks of synthesizer strings, creating a sublime sense of the natural external and internal worlds harmonizing. Each of the album's tracks is an ideal length for beginning meditation, and each is different enough to create its own unique experiencefrom the gongs sounding like distant thunder in "Journey to the Heart" to the gently crashing surf and echoing pizzicato flute of "Turn of the Tides." A student of an array of musical styles before heeding the inner call of Reiki work, Shajan's music is fully functional as an aid to professional massage therapists and yoga and meditation teachers, since it's made by one who is a master of both healing and musical arts. These sounds are alive and seem to instruct the body in a language that bypasses the mind altogether. Close your eyes and you can feel yourself guided by his gentle melodic directions; the effect is like a slow awakening of electrical light throughout the body.

Every now and then I come across a very original CD, and this, Shajan's debut CD, is one of them. It has the most serene instrumentals that I've heard in a long time. It's ideal for use with Reiki, meditation, massage or even just for dreaming. It will take you far away to a calming and blissful place.

Shajan is a brand new artist on Sequoia Records and also a Reiki master who composes his music using his knowledge of Reiki to create music for relaxation and reduction of stress. These ambient melodies are composed using piano, guitar and flute in combination with many synthesized elements to create serene atmospheres. The first track reminds me a bit of Robert Rich/Steve Roach style ambience while the second is more Kitaro-esque beginning with sounds of nature and moving into more synthetic and abstract territory. The synth-flute sound used later in the track is very interesting. The third piece begins with ambient tones, nearly like something you'd expect from Brian Eno but quickly moving into more New Age territory while maintaining the tonal atmosphere. Beginning with cymbals and gongs the fourth track moves into an ambient territory more akin to the likes of Michael Stearns or some of the other Space Music artists. Shajan could almost be considered a Kitaro for the west in my opinion as his sound structures, ambient tone sequences, and experimental synthetic environments are quite reminiscient of the eastern musician in some respects.

OK, I can't say that I know what Reiki is, but I think this CD's liner notes explain it. Doesn't matter, though. What matters is this CD. It's friggin' great! Shajan does a great job of offering up a chunk of chillout tracks that really are chillout inducing while maintaining real musical entertainment value. In other words, the listener's relaxation here isn't boredom-induced slumber resulting from chilled artistry (or the lack thereof). What you get here is genuinely absorbing new age music ably mixed with sea sounds (such as water and whales and such). You also get a set of tunes that actually distinguish themselves from one another rather than just limping along in ho-hum mode. Some real thought was put into these tracks, it would seem. I mean, Shajan knows what he's doing.

He seems to always know exactly what her listeners need to find harmony and balance in order to heal and focus. He is an inspiration and I adore all of his releases, though this and Ocean of Silence 3 are my top two. —  Emma Casparian
