Dr. Arlene Alexander is the kind of meditation guide whose voice moves beneath the listener's consciousness so rapidly that it's hard to remember a word she says. Her lightly raspy, dreamy voice echoes like she's whispering right inside the listener's brain. One tends to see what she says rather than hear it. Her Inner Journeys to Tranquility are 20-plus minute meditations that are so effective and relaxing that even beginners should have no problem sinking completely into her guided imagery—from just breathing from the diaphragm all the way to becoming one with everything: "You are everywhere," she says. "Let yourself go into the divine energy." As the accompanying music by Steve and David Gordon gradually alters and shifts from echo-drenched piano mode to chimes to dronelike electric guitar, that kind of deep merging becomes possible even for those coming to guided meditation for the time.
On "Breathing Exercises for Relaxation," ambient synths slowly cascade under Dr. Alexander's patient voice as she gradually guides us into diaphragmatic breathing and merging with the flow of the universe. Gulls and ocean waves come wafting softly through as the breathing deepens and Alexander gently guides each inhale and exhale. By the end you are breathing "your own energies into the cosmic" and have merged with the divine, and the last eight minutes play out with gentle music: shimmering, whale call-like drones; chimes; and flowing, rhythmic ocean waves.
In "Tropical Waves and Golden Light," Dr. Alexander patiently guides the listener into the healing, warm golden light of the inner sun, while crashing surf and electric guitar reverberate softly. "Deep inside there is a place where everything is all right," she begins, and within moments she's found that place inside us and is pointing out the sights and sounds we've been ignoring too long.
Dr. Alexander does not mince words in Inner Journeys to Tranquility. She plunges us into relaxation like a swimming teacher pressed for time, helping us find that place deep down in one's heart where the "white sand extends for miles and miles." She even connects the listener's inevitable stray thoughts to the visualization itself, encouraging the idea of impermanence, letting the distractions come and go like seagulls that come and go across the sky. After awhile they'll fly past less often as everything gets more and more golden and bright. No risks of sunburn either, but the glow of an inner suntan may linger for hours afterward, as will the feeling of peace and the connection to the eternal divine within.
